A retired madrasa teacher and his daughter-in-law were strangled to death in Dupchanchia upazila of Bogra and their money and gold ornaments were looted. It is learnt that 11 members of an inter-district gang of robbers were involved in the incident. Among them, the leader of the gang, Abdul Hakim (34), gave a confessional statement under Section 164 in the court.

Judge Faruk Ahmed of Bogra Senior Judicial Magistrate Court-3 recorded the statement on Tuesday evening. Abdul Hakim is a resident of Berunj village in Dupchanchia upazila of Bogra. There are seven cases against him, including robbery, loot, theft and banditry.
The court has granted a three-day remand to another accused, Abdul Mannan (50), arrested in the robbery and murder case. Mannan, a resident of Laxmi Mandap village in Dupchanchia, used to work as a guard in a deep tube well owned by the deceased householder.
A team of Bogra DB arrested Hakim and Mannan from the capital’s Kamalapur area last Monday. Based on the information provided by them, another member of the robber gang, Rafiqul Islam (41), was arrested from Nageshwari upazila of Kurigram on Tuesday. He is a resident of Basikoda village in Adamdighi upazila. Several gold ornaments and money looted from the arrested three were recovered.
Inspector of Bogra court Mosaddek Hossain confirmed the statement of one accused in the court and the remand of the other.
On the night of July 8, retired teacher Aftab Uddin (70) and his son Riva Akhter (35), wife of Saudi expatriate Shahjahan, were murdered at their home in Laxmi Mandap village of Dupchanchia. On the morning of July 9, the bodies of the father-in-law and daughter-in-law, with their hands and feet tied, were recovered from the house. After the incident, Aftab Uddin’s daughter Tahmina Bibi filed a murder case with Dupchanchia police station. The district DB was given the responsibility of investigating the case. After that, multiple teams of DB went to the field to unravel the mystery of the murder.
Bogra District Detective (DB) Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Iqbal Bahar told Prothom Alo that with the help of intelligence information and technology, two robbers were arrested from Kamalapur at one stage of the investigation. Another one was caught from Kurigram based on the information they provided.
According to the court and investigation sources, in his statement given under Section 164, Abdul Hakim said that his former tubewell guard Abdul Mannan had planned the robbery at Aftab Uddin’s house. Mannan knew Aftab Uddin’s financial situation and the information inside the house. At one point, he was dismissed from his job due to drug use and embezzlement. Later, angry, he planned the robbery and contacted the hakims.
